grade 2 newsletter aug. 31st

Shalom Dear Second Grade Parents!
Our second week of school was very busy and exciting. In Chumash we started learning about the creation of the world in Parashat Bereisheet  and also practiced our reading and understanding of a few psukim. We are working in our special Bereisheet packet and will continue to do so next week. We read and learned some special Chumash vocabulary from the psukim. In order to help us remember these words, we played mime games and matching games. We also discussed the question: why did Hashem create the world by speaking? We thought and decided that this, too, was a lesson for us. The Torah wants to teach us the power of "words".  We can make our friends smile with our words , but can also hurt them with our words. Ask your student what Hashem created on the first day. Ask him/her to say the words that Hashem used when He created ( the light) . They love to use a good "Hashem voice." We did Kebaba this week and I love reading the wonderful compliments the children are getting for their reading and comprehension. Let me reiterate the rules for Kebaba. It can be done once a day only. And the same pasuk cannot be repeated more than three times. We have quite a few children who have already completed stage One. Kol HaKavod! We also reviewed our gematria ( numerology) this week and began learning how words in Hebrew are either zachar ( masculine) or nekeiva ( feminine). We will need this skill to be good Chumash detectives.  In Dinim we are learning about Chodesh Elul and reviewed the months of the Jewish year. We are busy working on our special Elul and Rosh Hashana packet.
Tomorrow ( Friday) we will learn about this week's parsha and have a Shabbat party led by Rabbi Elbaz. Please encourage your child to share the D'var Torah at your Shabbat table and return the page signed. If decorated it will hang in our Yofi Shel Parasha corner. It is already beautiful with last week's parsha pages!
Please always let me know of any concerns or questions.
Hope you enjoy the long weekend!
Shabbat Shalom!
