grade five judaic newsletter for aug. 24th

Shalom Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
Welcome back and what a great first week we had in kita heh!
After reviewing some of the rules of proper classroom behavior, we dug in to our Judaic studies.
In Chumash we started Parashat Mikeitz and learned about Pharaoh's strange two dreams. Your fifth grader should be able to tell you about them accurately and even explain most of the Torah's language in perek 41 psukim 1-8. In fact there we will have our first Chumash test on Tuesday the 28th . Your child should review using the worksheets we completed in class and the list of Chumash vocabulary words which can also be found on a worksheet. This time the "test" ( really a "shmiz" or "quest") will cover only the basic explanation of these psukim and limited vocab. words ( the 10 on the worksheet).  We started doing Kebaba  and one of our students already finished stage one: Kudos to Jane! In order to help us remember the new Chumash vocabulary the students thought of creative ways to write or draw the words that would show their meaning. Beautiful examples of their work will soon either hang in our classroom or in our hallway.
In Navi we managed to review a bit of what they learned last year in Sefer Yehoshua and even begin Sefer Shoftim ( Judges). We learned that of all the shevatim only Yehuda and Shimon continued to conquer their territories while the other shevatim grew tired of war and allowed the Canaanite nations to remain in Eretz Canaan. The students also got a map of the "nachalot" ( territories) and colored them so they can clearly see each tribe's territory.
In Dinim we started learning about Chodesh Elul and what the letters stand for. We will be getting our Dinim packet on Elul and Rosh Hashana this week. In the spirit of Elul and "shofar" ( from the root meaning to improve), we are working on this month's Middat HaChodesh ( the virtue of the month) and that is: patience. This includes being patient and not shouting out or talking to a friend when you should not be, etc.
On Friday we learned about this week's ( ok last week's , I had planned on getting this to you on Friday!) parsha: Shoftim. We discussed the laws pertaining to the Jewish king and the students even had a "thinking" question to answer for Monday. I hope they discussed the parsha with you and I am sure they will have wonderful ideas to share with the class tomorrow. Please remember to sign your child's parsha page , so I know they did discuss it and have them return it tomorrow. If decorated it will hang in our Yofi Shel Parasha " corner, as well, as earn him/her  a sticker in the incentive chart.
We also had our first beautiful Shabbat party led by Rabbi Elbaz. The children sang a few songs Rabbi Elbaz taught them and did a wordsearch on the parsha.
Like I said it was a busy first week!
I hope you had a great weekend!
Morah Robin
